This tour focuses on searching for animals in their natural habitat, experiencing the rainforest as fully as possible, and learning about the jungle’s intricate ecosystems.
Travel by boat on the river, birdwatching, night walk, nature hikes , balsa raft on a small lake
We’ll pick you up from your hotel early in the morning in a private van, and travel through the Andes Mountains. Breakfast is in the charming town of Paucartambo. You can enjoy a hot drink, eggs, pancakes, juice, and more. Breakfast isn’t included in the price of the tour.
The trip will continue into the Cloud Forest, where the scenery and climate change quickly. In the Cloud Forest, there will be chances to explore and look for wild animals like monkeys and birds, including the bright-red Andean Cock of the Rock.
In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive at Pona Lodge for dinner and some time to relax.
We will start the day with breakfast at the lodge, then load into the van to visit a couple local jungle villages, an area known as Kosñipata. Here we will stop to visit a coca plantation, before heading to the port town of Atalaya where we will get into the boat, and start a short journey down the Madre de Dios River. Along the riverbanks we will search for birds and enjoy the beautiful views. We will arrive to our lodgem settle in and relax, and have lunch.
After lunch, we’ll visit Machu Wasi Lake, an oxbow lake that is a slice of paradise for various birds and mammals. We will explore the lake on a balsa raft, admiring Hoatzin bird and searching for capybaras. We’ll watch the sunset, then look for the more nocturnal creatures: tarantulas, spiders, frogs, caimans, and more. We’ll return to the lodge for the night.
Early in the morning, before the sunrises, we will head out to visit a local clay lick, where parakeets and some macaws come to have their breakfast as the sun rises. As the birds depart, we’ll head back to the lodge for our own breakfast, and set off on a hike around the area. We’ll be on the lookout for monkeys, birds, mammals, and insects. You’ll learn about the complex ecosystems of this special place, and some jungle survival skills too. Then we’ll head out for a late afternoon hike to see the birds in their most active time of the day. After dinner, we can go on an optional night walk to explore more of the jungle’s creepy crawlies.
After breakfast, we will return to Atalaya port by boat where our private bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.
We return to Cusco via the cloud forest and Paucartambo. We will arrive back in Cusco in the early afternoon.
